Fool’s Paradise, a name coined by Scarborough renowned artist Doris McCarthy, sits sedately on a plot of land, now part of the Ontario Heritage Trust, but originally the home of Doris. It has become a property used for “Artists in Residence” programs administered by the trust. This sight, not generally open to the public because of the residency program, but open on special occasions, is a direct echo of The Doris McCarthy Gallery at The University of Toronto Campus where there is a collection of her many landscape paintings, and also regular exhibitions mounted by artists and groups.
Doris, in her long lifetime, was a member of many of our major art societies and enjoyed exhibitions in prominent locations while also being a teacher at Central Technical School. Doris is perhaps most famous for her paintings of the Canadian Arctic, which is her enduring legacy to the history of Canadian art.
