Brief info
Neville Clarke was born in Kingston Jamaica, immigrated to Canada in 1974, and lived in Orillia, Ontario.
He studied Art Fundamentals at Sheridan College in 1979, then Fine Arts at the Ontario College of Art
including the Florence, Italy Program 1980-84.
Neville received membership to the Ontario Society of Artist and the Canadian Society of Painters in
Water Colour in 1995. He served on the board of directors for the CSPWC in several capacities as
exhibition Chair, Fundraising and Symposium committees, then as president from (2001-2003). In 2001, he presented a portfolio of watercolour paintings to HRH, the Prince of Wales for the Royal Collection on behalf of the CSPWC’s 75th Anniversary, at Canada House in London England.
Neville taught Traditional Media in the Illustration department at Seneca College (2012-2014) and as
figure drawing instructor at the Varley Art Gallery (2000-2013). He currently teaches in the Fine Arts Studio Program at Centennial College and had worked for a time as Summer Coordinator for both the Arts and Design Foundation Studies (ADFS) and the Fine Arts Studio Program. He served on the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) for both Centennial and Durham College and was asked to implement a pilot project to evaluate the feasibility of Hyflex learning in the Fine Arts Studios at Centennial College, fall
2021.
He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally with works being shown in Japan, Mexico, Seoul Korea, Italy and the USA. His artwork includes private collections and public institutions such as the ROM, PAMA, the Varley Art Gallery of Markham, Helson Gallery, City of Toronto, Art Gallery of Guelph, Thames Art Gallery, Glenbow Museum, Arts & Letters Club of Toronto and HRH, The Prince of Wales.
He is included in Who’s Who in Black Canada and a Dictionary of Canadian Artists amongst other written articles and publications such as Watercolor Magic, The Artist Magazine and International Artist Magazine.
He received the A.J. Casson Medal and Honour Award, CSPWC (1995 & 1999), the Charles Comfort Medal, CSPWC, (2000 & 2007) the Roman Corporation Award, (ALC) (2000), the David B. Milne Award, (BAG) (1994 & 1996) and in 2002 received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant to complete the series of paintings titled, “Threshold.” He received the Legacies Award, Black Students Alliance, OCAD (2004) and the Ontario Association of Art Galleries (OAAG) Curatorial Writing Award for First Publication, Tribute: The Art of African Canadian in 2006.
Neville is a collector of Canadian historical art and lectures on the history and development of
watercolour paintings in Canada. He served on the Art Committee of the Arts and Letters Club and has procured acquisitions for the AGO’s permanent collection.
