If we analyze this painting by the statement of primary and secondary colours we have yellow complimented by purple, and red complimented by green, which appears far too simple for the structure of the work because of all the shades and tones that are included, but it is a starting premise for understanding the design anatomy. From the colour theory perspective it generally fits with Joy’s work,  but that same type of theory includes that objects are often a colour reflection of everything that surrounds them, in which case the colour can become far more complicated, comparable to the approach taken by the impressionist painters. Here I think the likeness was the objective as that is what seems most confident in the painting.
