One presumes that everyone knows Doris McCarthy was a renowned painter of Canada’s arctic, but now years have passed it is not necessarily true, so let it be said for all to know. Doris was a member of all our national societies and a former president of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (1956-58). Doris was a teacher at Central Technical School and much celebrated for both her oils and watercolours. Doris was a good friend of Joy’s and received this portrait as a gift. The iceberg structured blue green background is entirely appropriate considering the numbers of times that Doris painted the arctic. That joyous face would be recognizable to many Scarborough art enthusiasts. Hidden in the brushstrokes is the fact that Doris established the Doris McCarthy Award for members exhibitions of the CSPWC. Doris received the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario for her work as an artist.
