Joy left some loving comments about Ruth Haddock on her Facebook posting because she was such a positive lady. When one looks at her portrait that fact is likely apparent from the facial expression chosen and the wonderfully bright colours used everywhere. The design pieces are abstract to a great degree which is an interesting ploy to bring attention to the realistic details of Ruth’s face and clothing, the most obvious part of painting a portrait. One doesn’t paint a portrait in order to look at the background. The background is however very interesting when one thinks about how it helps to organize the design and make it impressive The triangle exiting on the left is echoed by the triangle coming in from the right, and also the the triangle of the hat disappearing out of the top of the painting. There is more to contemplate in this piece, and you should do that.
