Commisioned by his mother, a neighbour, this piece was painted to commemorate this lad’s graduation from college. The names and the painting are lost but I think in Ontario we could assume that this lad is a graduate of the Royal Military College in Kingston. Well that would at least be a good archive to look into for any further information. Joy appears to have used the insignia of his regiment to create variation in the background, and the bright red and dark blue setting are a foil for his young face. Joy hoped that he had a great career and that is what all of us think about the special portraits of commissioned officers.
