This painting seems to be one of nostalgia with the pose that was chosen for Ray, one of Joy’s two nieces in South Africa. Maybe the contemplative expression is also part of the thinking about her job which was to rescue feral cats, a tough situation when some of them had to be euthanized. Out of all the poses chosen for sitters, this is one of only three that I found in the collection, so it was obviously chosen and likely had significance to Joy herself.
