This painting was Joy’s first entry into an Art Guild of Scarborough Exhibition, “Oliver” rendered in heavy textured, and long since disappeared, however, even in this poor quality photograph once can see all the basic characteristics of Joy’s portrait rendering style. Good contrast, texture clothes, and backgrounds acting as a foil to the skin colour, and lighting and brushwork to keep it lighthearted.
