This piece is a standout in the collection as even though Joy had plenty of friends who were people of colour this is one of only three portraits of that nature that she recorded on Facebook. Painted for a family who’s father had died it was commemorative. It has a lovely relaxed tone to the pose and a slightly serious feeling to the facial expressions, perhaps as a tip of the hat to its memorial quality. Joy wished for a more formal shirt as opposed to the T-shirt but I suppose that is what the family wanted. The leaning in of the heads provides all the intimacy necessary to let the viewer know this is a family picture.
