Joy couldn’t remember why she painted this portrait except that she liked the outfit. It certainly hints at a 1920’s fashion outfit, cocktail dress and fancy hat, but it was definitely painted long after that date. Joy has an uncanny artistic sense to use an outstanding colour choice for her backgrounds, in this case a very rich dark maroon to compliment the dress and to frame the pale face and lipstick. This painting apparently belongs to Jennifer Shelley.
