Lynn Atkinson was a good friend of Joy’s having become the first executive director of Arts Scarborough as it got off the ground. Lynn was also a great friend of Doris McCarthy so one can see that there are often great links between the people painted in Joy’s lifetime of portrait images. This piece is an echo of many other pieces where joy has used complimentary colour combinations to bring the composition to life. The details of her clothing and the busy dash of her hair arrangement frames the smoothness of the facial features. It is interesting to note Joy’s skill in modelling the three dimensional form without harsh brushstrokes that might incur a more rugged image. The result in a soft and feminine imagery appropriate to the sitter.
