This duo is part of the ‘broken ankle’ Lipton’s Soup commission of a total of 17 portraits. From that we know very little but the portraits are strong in their use of definition and contrast. It’s a strong piece, but likely ‘safe’ in its structure to commend it to the company as a viable advertising piece. These folks look like your friendly aunt and uncle who would likely be familiar with Lipton’s soups but wouldn’t eat them in these formal clothes. It is likely that Lipton’s goal was to show that regular everyday people across Canada, who approximate your own family members, all eat Lipton’s.
