This is Kaylyn, the youngest daughter in the Shelley family which provides the daily-care-giving for Genvieve, Joy’s mentally challenged step-daughter. Most all the photographs that you see in these records were taken by Joy and posted on facebook. Sometimes the files are pretty small, and this one didn’t have the same ‘zing’ observed in other pieces so I gave it a facelift, pun intended, to bring out the contrasts employed in all Joy’s work. Notice that the pastel quality of the oil painting colours is fitting to this young person’s age, and this gives her eyes a lively and more piercing quality. I think the same could be said about the dark recesses framing her teeth. These things create a sort of punctuation that wanders around the portrait in the shadows of the hair and the telling of the eyelashes. It’s all there giving Katlyn a very vibrant and happy air.
