Joy did a number of portrait pieces for the Monarchist League and this one is quite luscious with its bright red and deep blue of the military uniform. It is a record that the Monarchist League exists in Scarborough and I suppose it wouldn’t be too difficult for one to obtain the name of the sitter in this case, which by the way we don’t have. The fancy epaulettes and the decorated cuffs are likely the decorative emblems of this chaps regiment but in the painting they create a constant punctuation of white along with the lamb-chop sideburns. The pose and the decorative pieces are all very ceremonial which is fitting to anyone belonging to the Monarchist League.
