“I’m back to choosing one of my strange concoctions today. Believe it or not this one actually received an “Other Media” award! It always makes me think the man with the black eye has been attacked by a rabid mouse….. The airborne wooden bird mid-way down was carved by Christa Graf so when she came down from Lakefield to see Norma Heaver last year I gave her this assemblage so the bird would be home again. Don’t ask me where I found all the other bits and bobs …. they’re just a shell, a little bone, pebbles shards of glass, a leather thong and other whatnots from my stash.”
Of course these compositions are three dimensional so their full effect is somewhat lost in a photograph, and we have little indication of exact size, however, one can tell that the parts of the ‘stash’ are placed carefully for their dynamic quality’s best advantage. Take for example the rhythm of the colours: three whites, three bronze, three greens. None of it is an accident, in fact it is well thought out. To what purpose? Well, your imagination will let you know the answer to that question. All the pieces are ‘real’ but the meaning is endlessly abstract.
