Joy doesn’t often include other objects in a portrait but it was intentional in this case to attempt to tie two separate portraits of brothers together in a diptych. The photos were taken in Joy’s very natural backyard, where this branch, a favourite of the many squirrels who fed there, acted as a portrait prop. I am not sure that the idea worked as well as Joy would have liked as this lad looks like he is wielding the branch in a way, and his brother looks like he is using the branch as an arm rest, however, it is a rare example of adding a feature not really related to the portrait itself. You can hunt for the very few portraits in this collection that include specific objects other than the sitter.
