Chosen by me once for a ‘Juror’s Award’ in an Art Guild exhibition this is actually quite a divergence from Joy’s normal portrait work. I think it was a bit whimsical as Joy purchased the canvas at a fundraising auction sale and it already had another painting on it. Joy saw it as a challenge to produce something on it for the next fundraising auction and because it had the proportions of a full length standing figure she chose the good humour of a female nude with vines in attendance at significant points that might otherwise offend. One would have to say that nude studies are much more amenable to European cultures than our own, but everyday folk might be a little more appreciative of the feat of painting one if they realized how difficult it is. Joy’s six foot Garden of Eden type figure includes trees and birds, and a good touch of her usual good humour.
